Tiler
Lay ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, and mosaic tiles on floors and walls — a precision surface finishing trade that is integral to every building project in Sri Lanka.
Tilers prepare and lay tiles on floors, walls, and specialist surfaces in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Their work spans floor tiling (living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, and commercial lobbies), wall tiling (bathrooms, kitchens, and feature walls), waterproofing systems for wet areas, natural stone laying (granite, marble, limestone, and slate), and specialist mosaic work. In Sri Lanka, tilers are employed on every residential and commercial construction project — apartment buildings, houses, hotels, hospitals, schools, and government buildings all require tiling. The apartment building boom in Colombo and its suburbs, the hotel construction along Sri Lanka's coast, and the government's housing programme all create very strong demand for skilled tilers. NAITA and VTA offer NVQ Level 3–5 in Floor and Wall Tiling. Self-employment is straightforward: a skilled tiler with tools and transport can build a profitable independent business quickly. The Gulf construction market employs large numbers of Sri Lankan tilers for high-end hotel and commercial fit-out tiling. The most skilled tilers work with large-format porcelain slabs (1200×2400mm), book-matched marble, and complex mosaic patterns — skills that command significantly higher rates. Waterproofing system installation (tanking and wet area membrane application) is a premium skill that combines with tiling for bathroom and balcony work.
What a Tiler does daily
- Prepare substrates: checking for flatness with a straight edge, applying self-levelling compound, and preparing adhesion surfaces
- Set out tile patterns: establishing datum lines, planning tile layout to minimise cuts and centre patterns
- Apply adhesive and lay tiles: notched trowel adhesive application, tile placement, spacer use, and alignment
- Cut tiles: angle grinder, wet diamond tile saw, and manual tile cutter for straight and curved cuts
- Grout tile joints: selecting grout, mixing to correct consistency, and applying, cleaning, and sealing
- Install wet area waterproofing membranes before tiling in bathrooms and wet rooms
- Lay natural stone: marble, granite, and limestone slabs requiring sealant and specific adhesive systems
Step-by-Step Career Roadmap
- Research how floor and wall tiles are manufactured: clay body, glaze, and firing process
- Research tile sizes and types: ceramic vs porcelain vs natural stone
- Visit a tile showroom and identify 5 different types of tile and their intended uses
- Research how a professional tiler plans a tile layout before cutting
- Practice measuring a room and calculating how many tiles are needed
- Visit a tile showroom and list 5 tile types with their sizes and typical applications
- Measure a bathroom at home and calculate the number of 300×300mm tiles needed
- Research the difference between rectified and non-rectified tiles
- Research why small tile cuts at room edges look unprofessional
- Mathematics is essential: area calculation and pattern planning are daily tiling skills
- Natural stone is heavy: always handle large stone tiles with two people — back injury from improper lifting is a serious risk
