Plumber

Install, maintain, and repair water supply, drainage, sanitation, and gas piping systems in homes, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities — a consistently in-demand skilled trade across Sri Lanka's construction sector.

ModerateHigh demand Global career Entrepreneurial

Plumbers install and maintain the pipe systems that carry water, drainage, and gas through buildings. Their work covers hot and cold water supply pipework, soil and waste drainage systems, sanitary fittings (toilets, basins, showers), rainwater management, and in some markets gas installation. In Sri Lanka, plumbers work across a booming residential and commercial construction sector, maintaining existing buildings, servicing hospitals and hotels, and supporting the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) infrastructure programme. The NVQ Level 3–5 qualification pathway through VTA, NAITA, and DTET Technical Colleges provides the primary training route. Sri Lanka faces a significant shortage of qualified, certified plumbers — particularly for high-rise apartment buildings, hospital plumbing, and clean-room environments. As a result, rates for skilled plumbers in urban Sri Lanka have risen substantially. Middle East employment (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain) offers premium salaries for experienced Sri Lankan plumbers. The construction of new apartment towers in Colombo, resort developments in the Southern Province, and large infrastructure projects creates sustained domestic demand. Unlike many academic careers, qualified plumbers are practically guaranteed employment at any point in the economic cycle. The entrepreneurship potential is particularly high: many Sri Lanka's most successful construction sub-contractors started as plumbers.

What a Plumber does daily

  • Install cold and hot water supply pipes, valves, and fittings in residential and commercial buildings
  • Install soil and waste drainage systems: drain pipes, traps, venting, and connection to sewers
  • Fit sanitary ware: toilets, basins, bath tubs, showers, and kitchen fittings
  • Install water heaters, water tanks, pumps, and pressure systems
  • Diagnose and repair leaks, blockages, and pressure failures in pipe systems
  • Install rainwater management: gutters, downpipes, and stormwater drainage
  • Carry out NWS&DB water connection works and drainage approvals for new buildings
Why this matters: Clean water supply and safe sewage disposal are fundamental public health requirements. Every building in Sri Lanka — residential, commercial, hotel, hospital, or factory — requires professionally installed and maintained plumbing systems. Sri Lanka's construction sector is among the most active in South Asia, generating sustained demand for skilled plumbers. Water efficiency is becoming critical as urban water demand grows — qualified plumbers who can install water-saving fittings and detect and repair leaks play a direct role in water conservation.

Step-by-Step Career Roadmap

What to do
  • Observe how water supply and drainage systems work in your home or school building
  • Research how municipal water supply reaches a building and how sewage leaves it
  • Learn to identify different pipe materials: copper, CPVC, PPR, uPVC, and cast iron
  • Assist in simple home plumbing tasks: replacing a tap washer or cleaning a drain trap
  • Research how clean water prevents disease and why sanitation systems are critical for public health
Key subjects
MathematicsScienceTechnical Drawing
Skills to build
Pipe materials: understanding when copper, PPR, CPVC, and uPVC are usedGravity and pressure: understanding why water flows downhill and how pressure provides flowDrainage gradient: understanding why drains must slope at specific anglesBasic tools: understanding a pipe cutter, spanners, and plunger
Suggested activities
  • Draw a plumbing schematic for your home: water inlet, hot water heater, outlets, and drainage
  • Replace a tap washer with parental supervision
  • Research how a toilet cistern works and draw its mechanism
  • Visit a construction site and observe plumbing installation with permission
Important notes
  • Understanding drain gradients requires basic Mathematics — invest in mathematics from Grade 6
  • Plumbing involves work with water under pressure — respect the physics of fluid systems
