Painter and Decorator
Prepare and apply paint, varnish, and decorative finishes to buildings and structures — a consistently demanded construction trade with strong entrepreneurship potential across Sri Lanka.
Painters and Decorators apply protective and decorative coatings to interior and exterior surfaces of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Their work spans surface preparation (filling, sanding, and priming), interior and exterior painting, wallpaper hanging, texture and decorative finishes, industrial protective coatings, and site decoration for hotels and commercial fit-outs. In Sri Lanka, painters are among the most employed construction tradespeople — every building requires painting, every interior is finished by a painter, and every property maintenance contract involves paint. NAITA and VTA offer NVQ Level 3–5 in Painting and Decorating. Sri Lanka's construction sector — new apartment buildings in Colombo, hotel developments in Galle and Kandy, government housing programmes, and the commercial fit-out market — creates a very large and consistent demand for skilled painters. Self-employment is common and accessible: a skilled painter with a reliable client base can build a profitable independent business with low startup capital. The Gulf construction market employs large numbers of Sri Lankan painters for both industrial protective coating and high-end interior decoration. Advanced skills in texture painting, faux finishes, metallic and Venetian plaster effects, and industrial epoxy and intumescent coating significantly increase earning potential.
What a Painter and Decorator does daily

- Apply exterior masonry and timber paint: weather-resistant coatings, timber treatments, and sealants
- Apply decorative finishes: texture paint, sponge and rag effects, stencilling, and faux stone finishes
- Apply industrial coatings: epoxy floor paint, anti-rust primer, and intumescent fire-protection paint
- Hang wallpaper and apply wall coverings: paste-the-wall, paste-the-paper, and commercial vinyl systems
- Apply varnish, stain, and lacquer to timber furniture, doors, and joinery
