Network Technician

Install, configure, and maintain computer networks — local area networks, Wi-Fi systems, fibre optic links, and internet connectivity — a high-demand ICT trade powering Sri Lanka's digital economy.

Network Technicians design, install, configure, and maintain the cabling and active equipment that connects computers, servers, and devices into local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and the internet. In Sri Lanka, network technicians are employed by internet service providers (Dialog, SLT-Mobitel, Airtel), telecoms companies, IT service companies, corporate IT departments, government agencies, hotels, hospitals, universities, and factories. Sri Lanka's expanding digital infrastructure — government e-services, digital banking, e-commerce, ICT export companies, and the rollout of fibre broadband — creates strong and growing demand for qualified network technicians. NAITA and VTA offer NVQ Level 3–5 in Computer Hardware and Network Technology. Cisco's CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is the global industry standard networking certification and is widely recognised by Sri Lankan employers. The career divides into two main tracks: structured cabling (physical network infrastructure) and active networking (router and switch configuration). Modern network technicians are expected to cover both. The growing importance of Wi-Fi 6/6E, SD-WAN, network security (firewalls and VPNs), and cloud networking (Azure Virtual Network, AWS VPC) means that network technicians who develop skills beyond basic LAN setup have exceptional career growth potential. Gulf deployment is significant: UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia's construction and telecoms sectors employ large numbers of Sri Lankan network technicians, particularly those with Cisco CCNA and structured cabling certification.

What a Network Technician does daily

  • Install structured cabling: Cat6 and fibre optic cable runs, patch panels, and server room organisation
  • Configure managed switches: VLANs, spanning tree, port security, and PoE budget management
  • Configure routers: static routing, OSPF, NAT, and internet gateway setup
  • Deploy and configure Wi-Fi: access point placement, SSID configuration, RADIUS authentication, and site surveys
  • Configure firewalls: pfSense, FortiGate, or Cisco ASA — ACLs, NAT rules, and VPN tunnels
  • Diagnose network faults: ping, traceroute, Wireshark packet capture, and cable testing
  • Maintain network infrastructure: firmware updates, configuration backups, and performance monitoring
Why this matters: Every digital system in Sri Lanka depends on network connectivity. Banks cannot process transactions without networks. Hospitals cannot access patient records without networks. Factories cannot run automated production without networks. Sri Lanka's ICT export sector — generating over USD 1.8 billion in 2023 — depends entirely on reliable high-speed network connectivity. Without skilled network technicians, Sri Lanka's digital economy cannot function or grow.

Step-by-Step Career Roadmap

What to do
  • Research how the internet works: from your home router to a website server
  • Research the OSI model: 7 layers — Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application
  • Set up a home router: change the SSID, password, and DNS settings
  • Research IP addressing: what 192.168.1.1 means and what a subnet mask does
  • Install Cisco Packet Tracer (free) and build a simple 2-PC network with a switch

Skills to build
OSI model: understanding what each of the 7 layers doesIP addressing basics: IP address, subnet mask, and default gatewayHome router administration: SSID, WPA2 password, DHCP pool, and port forwardingPing and traceroute: understanding what these tools tell you about network paths
Suggested activities
  • Install Cisco Packet Tracer and build a 3-PC LAN with a switch and ping between them
  • Access your home router admin panel and explore all settings
  • Research what a DNS server does and change your PC's DNS to 1.1.1.1
  • Trace the route from your PC to google.com using tracert
Important notes
  • Mathematics is essential for networking: binary arithmetic and subnetting require confident arithmetic
  • English is required: all Cisco certifications, equipment interfaces, and international documentation are in English
