Motor Mechanic
Service, repair, and maintain petrol and diesel engines, drivetrains, and mechanical systems in cars, motorcycles, three-wheelers, and commercial vehicles — a foundational skilled trade with very high demand across Sri Lanka.
Motor mechanics service, repair, and maintain the mechanical systems of motor vehicles: petrol and diesel engines, manual and semi-automatic transmissions, clutches, brakes, differentials, axles, suspension, and steering systems. While the automobile technician role focuses on computerised diagnosis, the motor mechanic role is the backbone of Sri Lanka's vehicle maintenance industry — servicing the enormous fleet of three-wheelers, motorcycles, older diesel vehicles, lorries, buses, and agricultural machinery that cannot justify dealer-level repair costs. Sri Lanka has one of the highest three-wheeler densities in the world — hundreds of thousands of Bajaj and TVS three-wheelers — creating massive demand for motor mechanics who specialise in small engines, two-stroke and four-stroke repair, and carburetor maintenance. The motorcycle population (Honda, Yamaha, Hero, TVS) similarly requires thousands of skilled motor mechanics across the country. Commercial vehicle mechanics — servicing diesel lorries, buses, and construction machinery — are among the highest-paid mechanics in Sri Lanka due to the specialist nature and commercial urgency of this work. NAITA and VTA NVQ Level 3–5 programmes in Motor Vehicle Technology provide the standard training pathway. Many motor mechanics in Sri Lanka are self-taught through apprenticeship in local garages — formal NVQ certification significantly increases earning power and employment options, including international deployment to the Gulf.
What a Motor Mechanic does daily
- Service petrol and diesel engines: oil and filter changes, timing belt and chain replacement, valve clearance adjustment
- Repair and overhaul manual gearboxes: clutch, gear selection, synchroniser, and bearing replacement
- Service and repair braking systems: brake pad, shoe, drum, and disc replacement; brake fluid replacement
- Repair suspension and steering: shock absorbers, ball joints, tie rod ends, and steering rack service
- Repair and service three-wheelers and motorcycles: engine, carburetor, chain drive, and electrical
- Service diesel engines: injection pump timing, fuel filter replacement, and turbocharger inspection
- Perform vehicle pre-safety inspections: identifying worn components before they cause failures
Step-by-Step Career Roadmap
- Research how a 4-stroke engine works: the combustion cycle from intake to exhaust
- Learn the names of the major parts of a vehicle: engine, gearbox, differential, and axle
- Research why engine oil needs to be changed and what happens if it is not
- Visit a local motor mechanic's workshop and observe vehicle servicing with permission
- Research how a three-wheeler engine differs from a car engine
- Draw a labelled cross-section of a 4-stroke petrol engine
- Research how to change engine oil with a family vehicle as a reference
- Visit a local garage and list 10 different tools and their uses
- Research the Bajaj three-wheeler engine specification and service intervals
- Vehicle repair involves real safety risks: never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack
- Mathematics is essential for mechanics: calculating clearances, compression, and estimating repair costs
