Garment Technologist
Translate fashion designs into factory-ready garments through pattern making, grading, fitting, and quality control ā a technical career at the heart of Sri Lanka's USD 4.5 billion apparel export industry.
Garment Technologists bridge the gap between fashion design and industrial clothing production. They are responsible for creating and grading patterns, constructing and fitting samples, writing technical specifications (tech packs), managing garment quality throughout production, advising on fabric selection and construction methods, and liaising with international buyers' technical teams. Sri Lanka's apparel export industry ā the country's largest foreign exchange earner at over USD 4.5 billion annually ā employs garment technologists across its major manufacturers: MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hirdaramani, Hayleys Fabric, and Pacific Brands. Sri Lanka's apparel sector is positioned at the premium end of the global market, supplying Victoria's Secret, Nike, Calvin Klein, PVH, H&M, and Marks & Spencer. This premium positioning requires technically sophisticated garment technologists who can meet exacting buyer quality standards. NAITA and VTA offer NVQ Level 3ā5 in Garment Technology. The DTET (Department of Technical Education and Training) Garment Technology programme and the National Apparel Training Institute (NATI) offer higher-level qualifications. Degree programmes in Garment Technology and Fashion Technology are offered by SLIATE and several private institutes. Sri Lanka garment technologists are highly regarded internationally: garment technology graduates from Sri Lanka find employment in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar's garment sectors, and in the technical offices of buyers in the UK, USA, and Hong Kong.
