Biosystems Technologist

Apply engineering and biological science principles to design, develop, and manage biological production systems — spanning agricultural machinery, bioprocessing, bioenergy, and food systems engineering.

ModerateMedium demand Entrepreneurial

Biosystems technology (also called biosystems engineering or agricultural engineering) applies engineering principles to biological systems — including crop production, food processing, bioenergy, water resource management, and agricultural machinery. Biosystems technologists design and manage the engineering infrastructure of agricultural and food production: farm machinery, irrigation systems, post-harvest storage, grain drying, bioenergy generation, aquaculture systems, and controlled environment agriculture. In Sri Lanka, the degree of BSc (Hons) Biosystems Technology is offered at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, and is one of the only engineering-science hybrid degree programmes in agriculture. Graduates work in the Department of Agriculture, irrigation engineering agencies, food processing companies, agribusiness companies, the National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERD), and agricultural machinery companies. Internationally, biosystems engineering is a growing discipline at the intersection of agriculture, engineering, and environmental science — addressing food system sustainability, bioenergy, and precision agriculture.

What a Biosystems Technologist does daily

  • Design and manage irrigation systems: drip, sprinkler, and surface irrigation for crop production
  • Specify and maintain agricultural machinery: tractors, harvesters, and post-harvest equipment
  • Design post-harvest handling and storage systems: grain drying, cold storage, and packaging
  • Develop and manage bioprocessing systems: fermentation reactors and bioenergy plants
  • Design protected agriculture systems: greenhouses, hydroponics, and controlled environment agriculture
  • Manage agricultural water resources: watershed management and irrigation water use efficiency
  • Apply precision agriculture: GPS, sensors, and data analytics for farm management
Why this matters: Sri Lanka's agricultural sector suffers from significant post-harvest losses — estimated at 25–40% for vegetables and fruits — largely due to inadequate handling, storage, and packaging systems. Improving agricultural engineering infrastructure could dramatically reduce these losses and improve farmer incomes. Irrigation water efficiency is critical as climate change affects rainfall patterns. Biosystems technologists are the engineers who can design and implement the physical infrastructure that makes Sri Lankan agriculture more productive and sustainable.

Step-by-Step Career Roadmap

What to do
  • Visit a farm and observe the irrigation, machinery, and storage systems in use
  • Research post-harvest losses in Sri Lanka: why tomatoes and onions are lost between farm and market
  • Build a simple hydraulic system: pipes, pump, and nozzle as a science project
  • Study how drip irrigation works and why it is more water-efficient than flood irrigation
  • Research how a grain dryer works and why drying is important for rice storage
Key subjects
ScienceMathematicsGeographyEnglish
Skills to build
Hydraulics basics: pressure, flow rate, and pipe system conceptsAgricultural machinery: identifying tractors, harvesters, and irrigation equipmentPost-harvest basics: moisture content, temperature, and spoilageIrrigation concepts: water requirement, scheduling, and delivery efficiency
Suggested activities
  • Build a simple drip irrigation system for a school garden
  • Research how much fruit and vegetable is wasted in Sri Lanka every year
  • Visit a rice mill and observe drying and storage operations
  • Research how hydroponics works and set up a small system
Important notes
  • Mathematics and physics are the foundations — invest in both from the earliest possible stage
  • Biosystems technology is not widely known in Sri Lanka — research the degree at Peradeniya carefully
