Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) are responsible for the technical safety and airworthiness of aircraft. They inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and certify aircraft systems including engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, avionics, landing gear, and flight controls. In Sri Lanka, AMEs must be licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) under Category B1 (mechanical) or B2 (avionics) licenses, or the more comprehensive Category A license. SriLankan Engineering (the MRO arm of SriLankan Airlines) is the largest employer, conducting heavy maintenance, engine overhauls, and component repairs for domestic and international airlines. Smaller operators like FitsAir, Cinnamon Air, Millennium Airlines, and private charter companies also employ AMEs. Many Sri Lankan AMEs work internationally with Gulf airlines (Emirates Engineering, Etihad Airways Engineering, Qatar Airways), Asian MROs (Singapore Technologies Aerospace, Lufthansa Technik Asia), or European operators. AMEs work in hangars, on airport ramps, and occasionally in challenging outdoor conditions. The role requires mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a strong sense of responsibility — signing off an aircraft release certifies it safe for flight. Career progression leads from Line Maintenance Engineer to Base Maintenance Engineer, Inspector, Chief Engineer, or Quality Assurance Manager.
What a Aircraft Engineer does daily
- Conduct pre-flight, transit, and post-flight inspections of aircraft systems
